The Red Sea sells itself as a year-round destinati The Red Sea sells itself as a year-round destination. Winter is when it is actually good.

The destination's own published figure is an average temperature of 23°C with wind speeds between nine and sixteen miles an hour. July on this coast is not a beach holiday — it is a very good hotel with a pool and a reason to stay inside between eleven and four.

In the water, PADI's own guidance for the Saudi Red Sea puts temperatures between twenty-one and twenty-eight degrees across the year, with visibility of twenty to fifty metres. Winter sits at the cooler end of that range and the clearer end of the visibility one, which is the trade-off every diver would take.

The Al Wajh Lagoon, inside the Ummahat archipelago, is the primary diving area, and the destination's operations team has surveyed and vetted roughly thirty recreational sites within it.

Every luxury hotel in Saudi Arabia has a spa. Almo Every luxury hotel in Saudi Arabia has a spa. Almost all of them have three or five treatment rooms, a hammam, a menu, and a therapist who is very good at their job.

None of that is wellness in the sense the industry means it, and the distinction is not snobbery. It is the difference between an amenity you book on Tuesday afternoon and a reason to fly somewhere.

A programmed wellness property does something structurally different. It assesses you, it prescribes a course of several days, it controls the food, and it measures something at the end.

Until May 2026 Saudi Arabia did not have one. It now has two, and the category is about four months old.

Miraval The Red Sea opened on Shura Island on 15 May 2026: a hundred and eighty rooms, suites and villas, adults only, all inclusive, with a three-thousand-square-metre spa.

Six Senses Southern Dunes was designed as a wellness property from the plan up rather than fitted with a spa afterwards, and remains the best-integrated one — building, location and programme designed together.

In AlUla the setting does more work than the equipment, which is a reasonable division of labour. Banyan Tree's spa facades are compacted sand in horizontal coloured bands echoing the rock strata behind them.

The word season is doing a lot of work. It suggest The word season is doing a lot of work. It suggests something that arrives, like weather, and then goes.

What actually happens in Riyadh from October is that a government authority opens eleven purpose-built entertainment zones across the city, runs them for roughly five months, and then closes them again. The scale is closer to a temporary industry than to a festival.

The numbers the organisers publish are the fastest way to understand it. At the launch of the sixth edition in October 2025, the General Entertainment Authority put the previous year's attendance at more than twenty million visitors from over a hundred and thirty-five countries, valued the Riyadh Season brand at 3.2 billion dollars, and cited more than twenty-five thousand direct jobs, over two thousand one hundred participating companies — ninety-five per cent of them local — and four thousand two hundred private-sector contracts.

Those are not festival figures. They are the figures of an industry that switches on in October and off in March.

The five steel wings rising out of Zayed National The five steel wings rising out of Zayed National Museum look like sculpture and are in fact plumbing.

They are thermal chimneys. Air heats at their tips, negative pressure builds on the sheltered side of each aerofoil, and the resulting draw pulls hot air out of the atrium below while cool air arrives from ducts buried underground. The building breathes through them. That is the whole idea, and it is why the museum looks the way it does.

Norman Foster put it plainly when it opened: the building is an expression of sustainability, with five aerodynamic wings that are an integral part of the environmental system, acting as thermal chimneys and drawing cool air through the public spaces.

The metaphor is falconry. The mechanism is a wind tower running backwards — the traditional Gulf barjeel catches breeze at height and pushes it down into a room; this inverts that.

It opened on 3 December 2025, a project spanning roughly fifteen years, and for most of that time the most conspicuous unfinished building on Saadiyat. Foster + Partners won the commission in a competition in 2007.

In 2007 Saadiyat Island was sand. Today it holds In 2007 Saadiyat Island was sand.

Today it holds the Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum, with Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opening on 11 December 2026. Five major institutions inside a few hundred metres of each other, four of them opened in the last eighteen months.

No city has ever tried to do this in one go. The nearest comparison is Berlin's Museumsinsel, which took a century. Saadiyat has done it in under twenty years.

The Louvre's dome is a hundred and eighty metres across and weighs seven and a half thousand tonnes, resting on four piers you cannot see. Above it, seven thousand eight hundred and fifty stars across eight layers. The effect has a name: the rain of light.

The interesting question is not whether the buildings are good. They are. It is whether a cultural district can be assembled the way a portfolio is.

In the old town of AlUla there is a sundial. Resid In the old town of AlUla there is a sundial. Residents used it to mark the start of the agricultural season and the arrival of Al-Marba'aniyah, the coldest stretch of the year — the point at which planting begins.

It is called a tantora, and the largest festival in Saudi Arabia's cultural calendar is named after it.

That is not decorative naming. Winter at Tantora runs in exactly the weeks the sundial marks, because those are the weeks AlUla is habitable in the middle of the day and the weeks the oasis has always come alive. The festival did not choose a slot in the market. It inherited one.

The dates, as published by Experience AlUla: 17 December 2026 to 9 January 2027. Twenty-four nights spanning both Christmas week and the new year, which is deliberate.

Maraya carries the headline concerts — the mirror-clad hall in Ashar Valley, holder of the Guinness record for the largest mirrored building in the world at 9,740 square metres of mirrored surface. Five hundred seats. It is the single strongest argument for coming in this fortnight rather than any other.

Shorfat Tantora runs rooftop and balcony performances beside the Old Town. Smaller, closer, and the better room if you dislike arenas.
