Tattoos originated from native tribes hundreds of years ago. At the time, these tattoos symbolized manhood, perseverance, and power.

Oddly enough, tattoos still hold the same meanings. However, they also symbolize wealth and a form of artistic expression!

But if you’re not “tatted” you probably don’t know what goes into the process of tattooing. If that’s the case, keep reading our informative guide on tattoos for men.

What Are Tattoos for Men?

So what is the difference between tattoos for men and tattoos for women? For starters, tattoos for men are bolder, bigger, and often depict wild animals such as tigers, bears, and lions.

However, if this isn’t your exact style, luxury shops can help you determine what kind of tattoo style is right for you! For example, Tribal tattoos are massively popular amongst many men. Most of the time, this kind of style is done as a tattoo sleeve.

The geometric shapes and patterns help bring structure to the tattoo. At the same time, the dark colors and large proportions symbolize tradition, wealth, and power. Lastly, this kind of tattoo art is very spiritual and holds a lot of meaning in Polynesian culture.

Tattoo Styles and Placements

A tattoo sleeve has been trending for the past 20 years, and we don’t predict it going anywhere! However, other tattoo placements are luxuries!

For example, chest pieces are seen as very attractive and stylish. People will often get one big chest piece or smaller tattoos that are all concise with each other.

The best luxury tattoo styles for chest pieces are American and neo-traditional. Both of these styles incorporate bright colors, depictive images, and great details!

For any leg tattoos, a new school approach can be interesting! This style focuses on a singular person, place, or thing. The main goal for most artists is to create a realistic or human-like image.

For example, some men love getting their favorite movie characters tattooed on them. A new school approach will make the tattoo appear almost like a real photograph.

How to Choose the Best Tattoo Shop

Once you have a general idea of what tattoo you want, start researching shops. You can look online or ask for recommendations from people who already have tattoos.

Be aware that local tattoo shops may not have what you’re looking for. And they might not follow all of the rigorous health codes.

So if you’re looking for the highest quality work and care, consider going to luxury shops. Chances are, there will be a worker who specializes in your specific tattoo style. However, be aware of the high cost of luxury shops! Once you’ve picked the desired style, make an appointment!

What to Expect during Your Tattoo

On the day of your tattoo appointment, your artist will go over any details, make any final changes, and print out the transfer sheet. Once they have all the ink and tools ready, they will begin sanitizing the area.

They will then take the transfer paper and place it in the desired location. The artist will allow you to get up and look at the placement and overall outline of the tattoo. If you’re happy with everything, the artist will begin tattooing!

If you’re a first-timer, the first few hits of the needle might be a little overwhelming. Also, the noise of the tattoo gun can get a little intense. However, remember that your artist is working with you.

And they want to make you as comfortable as possible! So don’t be afraid to ask your artist for a small break in between your tattooing session. After your tattoo is finished, the artist will apply petroleum jelly and wrapping.

Following the proper instructions during your healing time is crucial. Be aware that during the first few hours, you may experience bleeding and ink sacks. This term refers to the ink/liquids mixing, which creates a sac-like appearance under the wrapping. But don’t worry because this is extremely common.

After 24 hours, you can remove the bandage or wrapping. Your tattoo artist should have given you a brief description of the cleaning and moisturizing steps. Nevertheless, start by washing the area with antimicrobial soap and water. Remember to pat dry and never scrub!

Then apply your healing ointment up to three times a day. If you notice some stabbing or peeling, don’t remove it! Let the skin heal on its own and only touch the area when cleaning or moisturizing.

If you don’t apply your ointment and clean the area, an infection could arise. Your skin could also reject the tattoo and begin peeling it entirely off!

How Long Does It Take for a Tattoo to Heal?

Your healing time will vary on a lot of different factors. However, after 2 to 4 weeks, you’ll start seeing less peeling and dryness.

But, this doesn’t mean your tattoo has fully healed. In fact, it can take up to 3 to 6 months for your dermis to heal.

So even if the top layer of the skin is healed, the inner layer may still need added moisture. So continue with your aftercare as long as possible!
